Police say woman lied about bank card theft
CRANBERRY TWP — Police allege a township woman lied about the theft of her bank card to hide a heroin problem.
According to court records, 23-year-old Megan N. Mellor of 143 Parkwood Drive reported to police and her bank that $307 was taken out of her account without her permission. Mellor allegedly told the investigators the withdrawal was made by a friend, who she named.
After the bank reimbursed Mellor, police spoke to her as well as the friend. Both women, according to court records, told police the withdrawal was made by the friend, but with Mellor’s knowledge and permission and the money was used to buy drugs.
According to court papers, Mellor gave a written statement in which she admitted to reporting the bank card stolen “because she did not want her husband and mother to become aware of the withdrawal or her heroin use.”
Mellor is charged with theft by deception, receiving stolen property, filing a false report and misleading a public servant. She is free without bond and is scheduled for a formal arraignment in Butler County Court on Nov. 17.
