Driver, 72, cited in NYE crash, knocking out power
SUMMIT TWP — State police identified the drivers in a vehicle crash that knocked out power to several hundred residents on New Year's Eve.
Neither driver — Diria L. Swager, 72, of Butler, and Pamela L. Porter, 39, of Saxonburg — was injured in the accident, which occurred about 3:10 p.m. Tuesday on the 200 block of Saxonburg Road in Summit Township, police said.
The wreck happened when Swager lost control of her northbound Ford Taurus on the snow-covered road while in a curve, according to a police report.
The car slid off the right side of the road and hit a guide wire attached to a utility pole, snapping off the top of the pole. Emergency crews at the scene reported some of the wires came down on top of the car.
Swager had to wait in her car for about 45 minutes until West Penn Power employees arrived and shut off the power to the downed lines.
One of the electrical wires or the broken guide wire struck Porter's passing Dodge Avenger, breaking the windshield. Live wires also caught fire to rubbish in a yard about 200 feet from the crash, according to Rob McLafferty, chief of the Herman Volunteer Fire Company.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
West Penn officials said about 750 utility customers were without service, with more than half of those living in Jefferson Township. Also affected were customers in Summit, Penn and Butler townships.
A crew from West Penn eventually replaced the pole. East Butler Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
Police cited Swager for driving too fast for conditions.
