Slow-starting SRU tops Lock Haven

Reynolds

SLIPPERY ROCK — With his team timid and sluggish early in the first half, Slippery Rock University men’s basketball coach Kevin Reynolds pulled his starters.

They sat on the bench and watched as The Rock sputtered to a 16-15 deficit against a one-win Lock Haven team.

“Our guys weren’t playing well,” Reynolds said. “We were trying to find guys who wanted to play. We were trying to find guys who were ready for the fight.”

The starters got the message.

When they returned a few minutes later, they helped to spark a 32-2 run that gave SRU full control of the game on the way to a 75-57 win at Morrow Field House Wednesday night.

Maron Brown tallied 17 points and eight rebounds in only 15 minutes for The Rock (17-6 overall, 7-2 in the PSAC).

Devin Taylor also had a big night in limited action, recording 13 points and seven boards in 13 minutes.

“Those two are all-conference type players,” Reynolds said.

The game, though, won’t compete for any PSAC awards.

There were 45 personal fouls and 41 turnovers between the two teams.

Lock Haven (1-18, 0-8) went nine minutes without scoring a point during one stretch and committed 24 turnovers.

The Rock were uninspired and reckless at times. Still, with a big game against Indiana (Pa.) University looming Saturday, Reynolds will take it.

“I’d rather win ugly than lose pretty,” Reynolds said.

Anthony Baker came off the bench to lead Lock Haven with 16 points.

The Rock outrebounded the Bald Eagles 52-30 and had a 21-3 edge on the offensive glass.

“We’re not taking this win lightly,” Reynolds said. “But I’m concerned because if we play like we did at the start of this game against IUP, we’re going to be in trouble.”

The Rock had a chance.

But chances to win aren’t good enough 21 games into the season. Victories are the only things that will satisfy first-year coach Tanya Longo.

Lock Haven (10-9, 3-5) went on a 7-0 run to start the second half and never trailed again on the way to the victory.

The Rock (3-18, 1-8) was outrebounded 52-29, shot poorly from the free throw line and squandered several opportunities to grab momentum late.

“Those three things compiled together are the difference in the game,” Longo said.

The Rock’s Alex Beatty came off the bench to score 16 points, including 5-for-5 from 3-point range for The Rock, and Danielle Smith had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Kristen Kudrick paced Lock Haven with 13 points. The senior surpassed 1,000 career points in the win that kept the Bald Eagles alive for a PSAC playoff spot.

There’s no playoffs this year for The Rock. While Longo has seen progress, she said it’s not enough.

“We’re to a point where we are putting some good minutes together,” Longo said. “We’re 21 games in. We’re 70 practices in. At this point, we know what we’re supposed to do, and when you can’t do it for 40 minutes, you’re not going to end up with victories at this point of the season.”
