Governor pushes jobs in visit to Saxonburg

SAXONBURG — Gov. Tom Corbett discussed job growth during a visit Thursday to Du-Co Ceramics.

Guided by company President Thomas Arbanas and CEO Lora C. Rothen, Corbett took a 45-minute tour of the facility, followed by a 20-minute news conference.

Corbett pointed to Du-Co as the type of innovative and resilient employer the state government must support to bring job growth to Pennsylvania, one whose employees work hard, pay their taxes and spend money in their communities.

“You do exactly what we want Pennsylvanians to do,” Corbett said.

He said the state needs to treat businesses “as a partner, rather than an adversary.”

“Our corporate taxes in Pennsylvania are the second-highest in the nation. That doesn’t make us very attractive.”

Pennsylvania’s corporate net income tax is 9.1 percent. The state also has a capital stock and franchise tax, which taxes warehoused goods, essentially double-dipping to tax the goods again when they are sold.

The governor, who has been in office for about 13 months, said that in the past four months 79,000 jobs have been added in Pennsylvania’s private sector, while 19,000 state jobs have been cut.
