Alton Johnson

Alton Edwin Johnson, 88, a resident of Luther Care, Lititz, Pa., formerly of Saxonburg, died on Jan. 30, 2014.

Born in Jamestown, N.Y. on June 21, 1925, his parents were A. Edwin and Elsa S. Berglund Johnson.

Alton grew up in Lakewood, N.Y., graduating as valedictorian from Lakewood High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy 7th Fleet as an electronic technician's mate, first class, in the Philippines during World War II.

Upon his return from the Navy, Alton entered and graduated from Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. In 1949, he married Dorothy M. Gustafson of Jamestown, N.Y., and they moved to Milwaukee, Wis. Their four children were born there. Later, they moved to Saxonburg, where Alton worked many years for Du-Co Ceramics.

He was a member of the American Ceramic Society and was a vice president of engineering at Du-Co Ceramics.

Alton was active in his family, his church, his career and his community. He served many years and on many committees on the Saxonburg Borough Council.

He served as an assistant lay minister, was on the church council and a treasurer for the St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saxonburg. After his retirement he was active in the Saxonburg Summer Theater.

Alton and Dorothy had a busy family life with four children. They enjoyed their home in Saxonburg, but also loved to travel to visit their family. Alton was a wonderful caregiver to Dorothy before her death in 2000.

Alton is survived by his children, Craig A. Johnson (Carol) of Ocala, Fla., Dale E. Johnson (Susan) of King George, Va., Connie M. McKane (Robert) of Lititz, Pa., and Ann L. Wilson (Dennis) Webster Springs, W.Va. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren and his five great-grandchildren.
