Fire crew respond to house fire in city, nearby water main breaks in the process

Fire crews responded Wednesday afternoon to a house fire on the 100 block of Third Avenue in Butler City.

A couple, Beverly and William Smith, were in the home when the fire started.

"We were up all night watching TV so we were asleep when the neighbor came over to the back door and woke us up by pounding on the door," said Beverly Smith. "When I got up I just saw smoke everywhere. I grabbed my husband and we ran out."

Beverly says that the damage was mostly contained to the ground floor of the building.

It is unknown at this time how the fire started. The fire has been extinguished.

The water main broke on the block when fire crews went to tap the hydrant to fight the fire, according to a representative from the water company.

The whole block is partially flooded and the blocked is closed to traffic.

Butler City Fire Department, VA Butler fire department and a Butler Ambulance Service responded to the scene.
