SR Community Library fundraiser
More than 100 people attended a murder-mystery dinner fundraiser for Slippery Rock Community Library at the Atrium Friday night.
Theater company Musical Mysteries & More gave a rousing performance of “MacDeath,” a play on Shakespeare’s tragedy that left audience members enthralled.
Librarian Tiffany Frampton said fundraisers sustain 75% of the library budget every year, as they receive no state funding. This is the first big event they’ve been able to have for years.
“I took a moment and stepped back and I just looked at the crowd. It just felt so normal again,” she said.
Community members sat at tables labeled as different Shakespeare works with rapt attention trained on the actors. Each act was performed before the course of a meal, and attendees tried to catch clues as to who could be the killer in the show.
Musical Mysteries & More’s actors frequently interacted with audience members, serenading them with parodies to famous songs like Katy Perry’s “Firework” and others.
Josie Toporcer, a grad student at Slippery Rock University, brought her two grandmothers and mother to experience the show with her. They’re a musical family, she said.
“When an actress came around and said there’d be spoofs of favorite songs, that’s been my favorite part,” she said.
Supporting the library was an added benefit to attending the show with her family, Toporcer added.
“Musical and Shakespeare lovers are a small community,” she said.
Slippery Rock Borough councilwoman Alexandra Tuten also came to the benefit with her family. She was happy she could see a show and support the library all at once.
“I want to get to know the organizations (the borough) partner with and find out what they need,” she said. “My favorite part has been seeing so many people I know from the community.”
Tuten said she considers libraries to be a great resource that’s available to everyone, regardless of education or financial status.
“I always set libraries as sort of a sacred place. All this knowledge is available to everyone. It’s one of the great equalizers. I’m so happy we have one in Slippery Rock,” she said.
