Man charged after store scuffle

A Wexford man allegedly resisted police Sunday afternoon after a physical altercation with another shopper in Cranberry Township's Walmart.

Cranberry Township Police charged Muhammad L. Rajput, 22, with felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor resisting. He was arraigned by District Judge David Kovach, who released Rajput on a conditional nonmonetary bond.

According to charging documents, police responded around 2:14 p.m. to the Walmart for a reported fight in progress.

“Officers were notified Rajput had assaulted multiple people,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.

Police said as officers worked to handcuff Rajput, the man bit into an officer's arm. Officers said he continued to resist.

“Rajput began kicking at my head, at which time I was struck once to the left temple,” police said.

After Rajput's arrest, police said they spoke with the woman with whom he was fighting. She allegedly told officers that Rajput had walked past her juvenile son and hit him with his elbow.

The woman asked Rajput to apologize and “Rajput began to yell and scream before striking (her) twice in the shoulder with closed fists,” police said.

Police said the two began fighting and other shoppers intervened.

Rajput is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Jan. 28 before incoming District Judge Kevin Flaherty.
