No county sports night can beat Nov. 18
Can you top this?
When it comes to a single sports night in Butler County, Nov. 18 of this year may go down as the best
ever.On that evening, the Mars High School girls soccer team won its first-ever state championship with a 1-0 victory over Villa Joseph Marie at Hersheypark Stadium.Moniteau’s varsity football team won its first-ever District 9 Class AA championship by defeating rival Karns City, 26-12, at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium.Knoch’s varsity football team punched its ticket for Heinz Field with a 9-7 triumph over Franklin Regional at Valley High School.Oh, yeah, all three of those victorious teams maintained undefeated seasons by winning.Mars’ girls wrapped up a 25-0-1 season — a 2-2 tie at Knoch its only blemish — and stunned a Villa Joseph Marie team ranked by one poll as the best prep soccer team in the country.Granted, any high school poll system should be met with skepticism. Ranking high school teams nationwide in any sport with any kind of accuracy is virtually impossible. But the point is, this Villa Joseph Marie team was pretty darn good. And Mars shut those girls out.Moniteau has put together a football team that sports a 1,000-yard passer and 1,000-yard rusher at quarterback, another 1,000-yard rusher in the backfield, and two defenders who combined for 45 quarterback sacks.Quarterback Kyle Armagost rushed for 129 yards and running back Dustin Geagan ran for 144 in that win over Karns City.Knoch completed the first perfect regular season in school history and only had a few days to celebrate before losing Alex Summers, one of the most popular kids in the school, in an automobile accident. That set off an emotional playoff ride to Heinz Field, capped by a 96-yard drive in the closing seconds for Kory Wood’s winning 20-yard field goal on the final play of the game against Franklin Regional.Highlighting that drive was a 73-yard pass play — Ky Kenyon to Ben Tackett — from the Knights’ 1-yard line. Not a bad night of local sports.Cleary, it was much, much more.It was a historical sports night in Butler County.Best ever.If anyone out there can think of a sports night in the county that can challenge that one, we’d love to hear about it.Kudos to Mars, Moniteau and Knoch. They produced a night of elation, emotion and achievement our neck of the woods may never see again.
