UPMC Children’s Hospital announced this week leadership changes aimed at growing its research initiatives and surgical programs.
Dr. George K. Gittes, a pediatric surgeon and basic scientist, has been appointed director of UPMC’s Richard King Mellon Foundation Institute for Pediatric Research. Gittes was also appointed co-scientific director at UPMC Children’s Hospital, and will assume the title of surgeon-in-chief emeritus.

Under Morell’s, UPMC Children’s pediatric cardiovascular surgery program has one of the lowest overall four-year surgical mortality rates, with a rate under 2 percent, and was awarded a three-star rating by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Gittes, who joined the hospital in 2005, has served as surgeon-in-chief of the Division of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery.
The division is one of the busiest surgical programs in the country and home to the Benedum Pediatric Trauma Program, one of two Level I Regional Resource Pediatric Trauma Centers in Pennsylvania.

Krivak has helped raise more than $500,000 for research on ovarian and other gynecologic cancers at AHN over the last four years, according to the health system.
He earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Toledo and a medical degree from The Ohio State College of Medicine.
