Cub fighters put on a show
A raucous crowd was ready to see some fights. And Butler Cubs boxers were ready to fight.
The Cubs won seven of their eight matches Saturday night in front of more than 300 spectators during the boxing program’s annual amateur show in the Cubs gym.
“I don’t think I set any kind of tone at all,” said Dustin Stoner, 21, who won the first bout of the evening by unanimous decision. “I just happened to go first.
“Any one of our guys would have done the same thing. We train hard in that gym. We’re serious about this.”
Veteran Cubs amateurs Lucas Adams, Billy Wolfe and Donovan Malovich all defeated high-caliber opponents. Shane Fitzpatrick and Damon Thiele won their amateur debuts. Brad Regis improved to 7-2 with a physical, bloody win in his 178-pound match.
Even the lone Cubs fighter to lose — 132-pounder Nick Davison, making his debut — put up a gutsy effort in bowing by decision.
“These were tough fights and we were in shape and ready to go,” Regis said. “We work harder in the gym than pro boxers.”
Malovich (24-6) is a Butler High School sophomore and a member of the Golden Tornado wrestling team. He was 23-11 on the mat this past winter.
Despite being back in the boxing gym for only a month, he punched his way past Braden Aggazio (25-6) in the most active three-round bout of the night.
“I thought I was going to lose in that last round,” Malovich admitted. “The guy was hitting me and coming on ... I was instinctively throwing punches back, but I was done. I wasn’t even sure what I was doing at that point.
“Still, that was fun, hearing all of those people out there screaming, getting excited. It helped push me through.”
Wolfe (27-5), a Pittsburgh Gold Glove winner last year, decisioned this year’s Gold Glove winner, Silvio Cercone (15-6) of Pittsburgh (15-6).
“That guy was good,” Wolfe, 14, said. “He was nobody to play around with. I knew we’d both be throwing a lot of punches. He caught me with a solid one, but I got him a few times, too.”
Wolfe suffered a bloodied nose in the bout, but still scored enough points to win.
“We never met in the ring before,” Wolfe said. “I want to turn pro in a few years, make a career out of this sport. These types of matches only help in that regard.”
The 18-year-old Adams (8-13) wants to turn pro late this year after a couple more amateur bouts. He won by split decision over Adam Littlejohn (29-14), a 36-year-old from Joe Heilman Boxing in Punxsutawney.
“I trained hard for this fight, but I thought I lost another close one,” Adams said. “When they’re split decisions, I’ve been losing. It feels good to come out on the winning end.
“My brawling days are over. I’m working on out-pointing the other guy, out-boxing him. Tonight was a good step for me.”
Thiele is 2-1 in MMA fights, but made his boxing debut successful with a unanimous decision at 170 pounds.
“I plan to concentrate on MMA, but boxing helps me with my hands and quickness,” Adams said. “These are definitely two different skill sets. A good MMA fighter won’t beat a good boxer in the ring, a good boxer won’t take a good MMA guy in the cage.”
Fitzpatrick, 16, won his debut by split decision at 170 pounds. He has been training in the Cubs gym and said he will definitely fight again.
“I’ve never experienced a rush like the one I felt in that ring tonight,” Fitzpatrick said. “I mean, everybody cheering, yelling my name. It felt absolutely awesome.”
Tom Cammisa, 57, improved to 5-0 in his amateur kick-boxing career by defeating Rick Kunselman of Harrisville, who was making his amateur debut.
Cammisa won his third senior (age 50 and over) amateur title. He owns the Pittsburgh, Butler and now Butler Cubs title bouts.
“This will probably be my last,” Cammisa said. “I credit Rick for fighting me. He’s as old as I am the only one who would step up and do it.”
