STATE COLLEGE — The Elite Athletic Center Gymnasts had several placewinners at the state championships last weekend at Penn State University.
Jack Codispot, competing at level 5, tied for first in the high bar and was third on the pommel horse while teammates Lev McCollough and Nick Vaccarello also took part at Level 5.
At Level 6, Michael Cichra was first on the high bar and second on the parallel bar to earn fourth place in the all-around. Jake Minton and Isaac Harbison also competed at level 6.
Conner Minton placed third in Level 4 vault.
The level 5 and 6 athletes listed above have qualified for the district competition, which will be held on April 9 and 10 in Virginia.
BUFFALO TWP — The Freeport freshman hockey team will face Bishop Canevin in the PIHL Junior Varsity title game at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.
HUMBLE, Texas — Kevin Stadler and Cameron Percy shot 5-under 67s on Thursday to share the first-round lead in the Houston Open.Vaughn Taylor and James Driscoll — Stadler's playing partners in a morning threesome — were a stroke back along with fellow morning starter Kevin Sutherland and Anthony Kim, who played in the afternoon when the wind picked up and gusted to 30 mph.Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood and 2007 champion Adam Scott were topped a group two strokes back at 69.
INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA appears to be on the verge of expanding the men's basketball tournament to 96 teams.Insisting that nothing has been decided, NCAA vice president Greg Shaheen nonetheless outlined a detailed plan that included the logistics and timing of a 96-team tournament, how much time off the players would have and even revenue distribution.Shaheen said Thursday the NCAA looked at keeping the current 65-team field and expanding to 68 or 80 teams, but decided the bigger bracket was best fit logistically and financially. It would be played during the same time frame as the current three-week tournament and include first-round byes for 32 teams.

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — Suzann Pettersen shot a bogey-free 5-under 67 in the Kraft Nabisco Championship Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over former champion Lorena Ochoa, who missed birdie putts on her final two holes.Ochoa, who teed off three hours after Pettersen in the opening round of the season's first major, had chances to tie the Norwegian star but rolled a long putt just right of the hole on No. 17 and then missed a 10-footer on 18.
CLEVELAND — Cleveland Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers was arrested Thursday at Hopkins International Airport after a loaded gun was found in his carry-on luggage.Rogers, who had been at the team's suburban training facility in recent days taking part in a voluntary offseason program, was stopped at a security checkpoint when officials spotted a loaded .45-caliber handgun in his bag, police said in a statement.He was arrested at 12:15 p.m. "without incident," transferred to a downtown processing center and booked for carrying a concealed weapon, a third-degree felony.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The NFL's oldest punter has signed on for another season.The 44-year-old Jeff Feagles agreed to a one-year deal with the New York Giants Thursday. He will compete for the job with former Australian rules football player Jy Bond.Feagles has never missed a game in his 22-year career and holds most of the NFL's significant punting records. He has spent the past seven seasons with the Giants and also played for New England, Philadelphia, Arizona and Seattle. He has a 41.6-yard career gross average and a 35.9-yard net average.
