PennDOT urges safe driving with wintry mix on the way

With a wintry mix hitting the area through Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 10 is urging motorists traveling through the area to plan for slippery road conditions.

In a news release, PennDOT said maintenance crews will not be able to pretreat the roads ahead of the snow because the treatment materials will be washed away by the rain that is expected to precede a drop in temperatures. And although PennDOT doesn’t expect major accumulation, it believes Wednesday’s morning commute could be especially slippery due to dropping temperatures, so motorists should slow down, use caution and plan for extra travel time.

District 10 includes Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana and Jefferson counties.

PennDOT suggests the following tips to drive safely on the road the next few days:

- If there is ice or snow on the road, travel is hazardous

- Allow plenty of time to reach your destination

- Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind the vehicle ahead of you

- Brake very lightly to keep your tires from slipping on pavement

- Do not pass snow plows

- If possible, avoid unnecessary travel until precipitation stops and road conditions improve.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 miles of road by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 950 traffic cameras.
