CRANBERRY TWP — The Level 4 team of the Young Champions Cheerleading organization placed first at a recent regional competition.

Young Champions are based in Cranberry Township with programs geared for children ages 4-15 to help promote and instill self-esteem, self-confidence, coordination, physical fitness, flexibility and teamwork.

PENN TWP — The 16th annual West Penn Junior Inter-Club Mixed Doubles Tennis Championship takes place Thursday at the Butler Country Club courts.The event features the top 18-under and 12-under male and female players from each of the particpating summer clubs. They combine to form mixed doubles combos representing their respective organixations.Registration is at 10 a.m. with matches beginning at 10:30 a.m. The event is open to the public at no charge.

The Butler County American Legion baseball playoffs begin Thursday with a double-elimination format.No. 3 seed Saxonburg (13-7) takes on No. 6 seed Butler City (3-17) at Laura Doerr Park while No. 4 seed Zelienople (7-13) meets No. 5 seed Cranberry (7-12) at Zelienople Park. Both games are at 6 p.m.Top-seed Meridian (15-4) and No. 2 seed Center Township (14-6) will play the winners Friday night at Pullman Park. Meridian faces the lowest seed at 6 p.m., Center Township meeting the highest seed at 8 p.m.The championship game is July 12.

Butler BlueSox pitcher Brad Duffy has been named the Prospect League’s Pitcher of the Week.Duffy took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Thursday against Slippery Rock in his lone outing of the week. He struck out nine.A junior at Mercyhurst College, Duffy is 2-2 with a 1.75 earned run average in five starts with the BlueSox. He leads the team with 36 innings pitched and ranks third in the league with 38 strikeouts.
