Police seek driver in freak fatal accident
MUDDY CREEK TWP — State police today are seeking the unknown driver of a heavy truck involved in a freak accident Tuesday afternoon that killed a worker with a crew moving a large utility pole on Route 422.
Allan Mark Greenwood, 29, of Belle Vernon, Fayette County, was killed when the unidentified tri-axle truck hit the utility pole that he was trying to attach to a work truck about 1:40 p.m.
The pole, in turn, hit Greenwood in the head. At the time, Greenwood, an employee of Bruce & Merrilees Electric of New Castle, was standing behind his work truck on Route 422 at Currie Road.
Moments earlier, a car had slammed into the same pole, breaking a portion of it and knocking it to the road.
“I’ve been called to a lot of fatal accidents, and I’ve thought I’ve seen everything,” said Butler County Deputy Coroner Dennis Trzeciak. “This was unlike any other.
“It was so bizarre that it took me 20 minutes to have some sense of what happened. It was that confusing.”
Trzeciak pronounced Greenwood dead at the scene at 3:15 p.m. An autopsy Tuesday night determined he died of severe head injuries.
Investigators said workers were attempting to move the 105-foot utility pole from a parking area near the Pilot convenience store on Route 422.
