Kaleidoscope Time 15th festival returns to SRU next week

Tugboat Printshop's Paul Roden will conduct three days of activities during Slippery Rock University's Kaleidoscope Arts Festival.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The 15th annual Kaleidoscope Arts Festival running April 14 to 28 on the Slippery Rock University campus will showcase the best of SRU's dance, music, theater, literary and visual arts, as well as nationally and internationally known guest artists.

Kaleidoscope's activity-filled Children's Day/Earth Day Celebration with the Macoskey Center, in conjunction with the Stone House Center for Public Humanities, will take place April 23.

This day is a family-oriented celebration including arts and crafts, games and activities for people of all ages at the Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems, Education, and Research (rain location: University Union).

The daylong program features appearances from the Moraine Elementary 5 Star Chorus, the New Castle Playhouse Mini Stars, a Creative Drama presentation hosted by the SRU theater department, as well as a musical performance and interactive drum circle with the SRU Music Therapy Club.

The Children's Day/Earth Day celebration also will include Earth-friendly and interactive demonstrations with local sustainable vendors. The event is free.

Joining Kaleidoscope for a two-week residency is multidisciplinary artist, Tim Stapleton, a scenic designer, painter, creative writer and performer.

During his residency, he will conduct several interdisciplinary workshops for SRU students in playwriting, theatrical design and visual art, as well as present an Artist Talk at 4 p.m. April 22 in the University Union MPR.

Capping off his time at the festival, Stapleton will offer two performances of his original play, “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” on April 24 and 25, which chronicles his upbringing in the Appalachian Mountains and subsequent return 30 years later. The set includes an art exhibition created by Stapleton, and the performance will also feature two SRU student actresses.

Kaleidoscope also will host Pittsburgh-based artist Paul Roden of Tugboat Printshop for a three-day residency. Tugboat Printshop has been publishing traditionally handcrafted color woodcut prints since 2006, and to date has published nearly 100 multi-block woodcut editions.

Roden will give an artist talk and presentation from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. April 19 and conduct open work sessions assisted by several art department students April 20 and 21. Events are free and will take place in the Art Building.

Other Kaleidoscope events will feature Emily Simons of the all-volunteer activist art group, Beehive Design Collective; Blisstaken, a three-piece poetry/jazz performance group, featuring original poetry read aloud, accompanied by jazz saxophone and guitar; Iranian arts scholar from the University of Pittsburgh, Soude Dadras, who specializes in the history of Iranian hand weaving; and Anime BOP!, a chamber ensemble of double reeds and piano.

As part of the SRU Performing Arts Series, the musicians of Barrage8 will offer a performance, playing all the instruments in the modern string family, on April 28.

Most activities are free. For more information, visit sru.edu/life-at-sru/arts-and-culture/kaleidoscope-arts-festival.
