Online auction company expanding to Butler
The online auction company M@C Discount, also known as Merchandise at Cost Discount, is expanding to a new location at the Greater Butler Mart.
The company has had a Butler location on Hindman Lane for about three years, but Shawn Allen, owner of M@C Discount, said the new Greater Butler Mart location will allow the company to expand in the region.
“We will be hiring about 30 new people,” Allen said. “We have found that the Butler community supported us well, so we're ready to expand.”
M@C, according to Allen, purchases overstock merchandise from department and specialty stores and puts them up to bid online, each starting at $1. He said the company's facilities house all the items up for auction, allowing potential bidders to look at the merchandise, and then pick it up from a site.
He also said most people served by the company live within a 13-mile radius of a M@C facility.
Over time, people can find and bid on almost anything on the site, from a bottle of shampoo to a 10-person hot tub, Allen said.
“We buy by the truckload and sell it individually,” Allen said. “The items are put up and for two days you could come in and inspect whatever you are bidding on. The rest all takes place online.”
Allen said the company signed a five-year lease at the Greater Butler Mart on July 15, but construction supply chain shortages have delayed the opening of the M@C store. He said he hopes to have it open by the end of this year.
M@C also has locations in Washington, McKees Rocks and Beaver Falls, and Allen said the company can transfer merchandise between the stores.
