The Mars pool, a fixture for more than 50 years, will not reopen, a decision made by the pool’s board of directors.

The pool on Stanton Avenue Extension, which opened in 1962, has a $150,000 debt on a loan from 2008. The board said such sinking finances have made it impractical to keep the pool open.

Nichole Fromlak, board treasurer, said day care, youth sports and the appearance of pools in housing plans are other strong reasons the pool is no longer viable in Mars.
