Readyfor a 'Shootout' Local playwright tells historic tale at Old Stone House
BRADY TWP — Local playwright Kevin Lukacs has penned another tale based on local history.
“Shootout at Slippery Rock Creek” will debut Sept. 11 at the Old Stone House.
Lukacs' original play “Old Stone House” was staged at the same venue last September.
“Shootout at Slippery Rock Creek” is being produced with cooperation from Butler Little Theatre.
The original play is based on the rumored exploits of the notorious “Stone House Gang,” a shady band of counterfeiters and horse thieves who occupied the Slippery Rock stagecoach tavern during the 1800s.
“This comedic one act follows Doc Holliday, his young assistant Freddy, and an old bank man named Scoots McQueen as they attempt to pull off the greatest crime never heard of,” Lukacs said.
“Complications arise as nosy young women and two New York cops nose their way in. It's the greatest story to kind of happen in Butler's history,” he said.
Greg Crawford of Chicora will play Julius “Doc” Holliday.
“Doc is a lovable opportunist, a con man with a soft heart,” Crawford said of his character.
“I love to be able to bring a warmth and a mischievous twinkle to the eye of any character I get to play who should have such. And Doc is just that sort of guy,” he said.
Crawford is no stranger to the stage and is not intimidated by the small venue.
“The Stone House is a small venue, so that's a challenge. But it is also a great opportunity for an actor, because you have to stay very sharp when you will only be inches away from your audience,” Crawford said.
“It's also a great opportunity for audiences to get to see the action and the actors extremely close up,” he added.
The role of the Southerner has been assigned to Nathan Fuhrman-Renwick of Center Township. This will be one of his first turns as an actor; typically he takes the stage as a musician.
He said he is learning quite a bit about the stage.
“It's a lot of work! I've always had respect for people who act and can act well. Being around the other actors who have much more experience than I do is really pushing me to work hard and be the best that I can be,” Fuhrman-Renwick said.
He said he's really enjoying the opportunity to work with his friend Lukacs.
“Kevin, the writer and director, is a good friend of mine. I've always admired his drive and passion for the arts. Also, he puts out solid work, and I've wanted to be a part of that for some time,” he said.
Lili, the innkeeper in the show, will be portrayed by Katie Moore of Franklin Township.
This role is shrouded in mystery, adding to the excitement, but Katie has stage experience and was selected by the author for this particular role.
Steve Fogle of Saxonburg takes on the role of Detective Mickey. A character actor at heart, he said he is delighted with the opportunity to tackle this role.
“I am hoping that I can bring a realistic portrayal of a New York detective to the role and still pull off a Laurel and Hardy kind of act,” Fogle said.
Madison Uram of Renfrew will play the role of Robin. “I'm just a sweet and innocent tavern girl, but when Freddy and Doc Holliday come to town, I develop a liking for Freddy and am pulled entirely from the world I'm used to,” said Uram.
This will be the first time Uram takes the stage outside of a school production, and she said she is excited for the opportunity.
“I wanted to be a part of this play to learn more about acting and what I can do. Also, I felt it had been too long since I'd been in a show, so I was glad to start up a new production,” she said.
The cast includes Rachel Lambert and Terry Thompson. Lukacs also acts in the play.
