More pipe needed for repairs

The Butler County Prison needs more pipe to replace rotting steam vent lines due to a snafu.

John Campbell, director of county facilities and operations, said at the county commissioners meeting Wednesday an additional 120 feet of pipe costing $18,354 is needed because of a miscalculation.

“There was a multiplication issue,” he said.

Campbell said the county would buy the additional amount from Hot Water Distributors in Pittsburgh, which supplied the original 250 feet of pipe for $30,800.

“We’re going off the same bid,” he said.

The new pipe replaces deteriorated lines in the boiler room of the South Washington Street prison, which opened in 2009.

Campbell said a better quality of pipe is being used to replace the decomposing metal.

He said in an interview the additional pipe would be delivered in the next two weeks, so the job should be done by Jan. 1.

Campbell said the original plan to tear down a wall as part of the scope of work is no longer necessary.

He explained an access point in the roof provides entry into the affected shaft.

The commissioners are set to vote on the additional expense at next week’s meeting Wednesday.

The current prison replaced a Vogely Street building dating back to the 1950s.
