Woman charged with forgery

A Butler woman is accused of forging a check from her dead grandmother’s bank account to pay court costs levied against her husband in his own criminal case.

Butler County detectives on Thursday charged Alicia M. Gregg, 30, with a felony count of forgery.

The investigation began soon after Gregg appeared Monday at the county clerk of courts office to make a payment on the balance her husband, Michael Gregg, owed the court.

He owed the money as part of his sentence stemming from a 2014 case of terroristic threats and retail theft.

Alicia Gregg turned over to one of the office employees a $350 check, which was written on the account of her grandmother, Gloria Jones, according to court documents. The check appeared to have Jones’ signature on it.

But later authorities learned that Jones died in November.

Investigators suspect Gregg forged her grandmother’s name on the check that her mother had previously reported stolen, documents said.

District Judge William Fullerton on Thursday issued an arrest warrant for the suspect on a charge of forgery, a third-degree felony.

Butler County Court records showed that Gregg already has four prior theft-related convictions.
