A tree was uprooted and fell on a fence at Fernwood Dr., Center Twp.

Monday's storm caused 2,800 outages in Butler County, including 1,300 in Butler Township, according to Todd Meyers, chief spokesman for West Penn Power.

“This is typically the kickoff for thunderstorm season,” Meyers said

Meyers said there was no estimate on when the outages would be fixed, but crews will be working 16-hour shifts overnight to get service restored. Some customer may be without power until Tuesday.

According to First Energy Corps' website, http://outages.firstenergycorp.com/pa, 2,583 customers in Butler County are currently without power. That number represents 3 percent of its customer base. Crews have been dispatched to two locations, along Route 8 north of Butler and Route 422 just west of Butler.

Severe storms rolled through the area around 3 p.m., bringing heavy rains and high winds that downed trees in the region. Two area school districts took precautionary measures by holding students and after-school transportation until the storm passed.

Butler County is currently under a tornado watch until 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
