Sarver man injured in stabbing by fellow sailor

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A 25-year-old Sarver native is in critical condition after he was repeatedly stabbed Friday morning by a fellow sailor.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin Powell, a 2007 graduate of Freeport High School, was stabbed multiple times in his chest and neck following an argument with another service member outside the Navy Exchange at Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, Portsmouth Annex, the Navy said.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Wilbur Harwell was arrested Friday following an hours long manhunt, according to the Navy.

He was caught in nearby Virginia Beach, said Capt. Michael “Jake” Johansson, commanding officer of Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads. It wasn’t immediately clear when Harwell, 26, left the installation or how he did so.

Johansson said the facility was placed on lockdown as soon as officials learned about the stabbing.

The Navy said Powell was taken to the naval hospital. He remained in critical condition after surgery.

Johansson said Powell’s wife was at the hospital during the surgery and that his parents were driving from Butler County to be with him.

Powell is the son of Pamela and Michael Powell of Sarver.

Security forces went door to door at the locked-down facility in search of Harwell.

The two men knew each other, Johansson said, although he wasn’t sure exactly what their relationship was.

Officials haven’t determined a motive, Johansson said. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is doing the investigation.
