Students suffer head injuries
SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Two Slippery Rock University students were injured during an altercation Saturday night outside an off-campus apartment building, authorities said.
One of the students was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital; the other was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
The students, both men believed to be in their early-20s, suffered head injuries, emergency responders said.
State police are investigating but a report was not available this morning.
The incident happened in or around the parking lot of the Grove Apartments on Harmony Road during move-in weekend at SRU. Classes for students began today.
The Grove on Saturday hosted its “Epic Pool Party.”
Police were called about 9:45 p.m. for a report of an unidentified person bleeding from the head after being assaulted in front of the apartment complex.
A Slippery Rock EMS crew tended to the injured man who apparently hit his head on the concrete after being punched and knocked down.
The man never lost consciousness and later was flown by STAT MedEvac to UPMC Presbyterian with a moderate head injury, authorities said. His condition was not known this morning.
A second man, who also was reportedly punched, was taken by Slippery Rock EMS ambulance to Grove City Medical Center where he was treated for a head injury and released.
Emergency crews said when they arrived at the apartment complex they found a large crowd in the parking lot but they don’t know what prompted the altercation.
Authorities suspect both men had been drinking alcohol before being injured.
Slippery Rock police and the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company assisted state police at the scene.
Meanwhile, a third man, also an SRU student, had to be taken to Grove City Medical Center after suffering suspected alcohol intoxication.
