Armstrong crash kills 3

Police say driver going wrong way

MANOR TWP, Armstrong County — Three people, including a Worthington man, were killed and another seriously injured in a wrong-way crash early Sunday morning on Route 28/66, authorities said.

Investigators continue to wait for toxicology results in the deadly collision that happened about 3 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the four-lane highway east of North Buffalo Township.

Preliminary findings of an accident reconstruction were unable to determined which driver was traveling the wrong way, state police said.

Killed in the collision were both drivers, Gregory W. Johns, 46, of Worthington and Alex Jonathan Davis, 21, of McGrann; and one of Davis’ passengers, Francis J. Danahey Jr., 27, of Verona, Allegheny County.

Another of Davis’ passengers, Michael Danahey, 26, of Kittanning, was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh with injuries that authorities described as “severe.”

Armstrong County Chief Deputy Coroner Robert Bellas pronounced Johns, Davis and Francis Danahey dead at the scene about 3:30 a.m. Autopsies determined that all died of severe injuries to the head, chest and stomach.

Police said Johns was driving a Chrysler 200 and Davis was driving a Subaru Outback when the two vehicles collided head-on.

Investigators would not say if they suspect alcohol or drugs were involved. Bellas noted that toxicology tests performed Sunday would not be available for three to six weeks.

Following the collision, meanwhile, a Dodge Caravan struck the bumper of one of the two vehicles, which apparently was only partially off the road, authorities said. Two people in the minivan were taken to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin Township with minor injuries.

The two wrecks shut down the highway for about six hours.
