PITTSBURGH — The Allegheny County Courthouse in downtown Pittsburgh reopened this morning, a day after a small fire in a ground-floor storage area caused smoke damage to the building's heating, cooling and ventilation system and several offices.

There were no reports of injuries after people were evacuated from the building after alarms sounded before 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The courthouse was closed for the rest of the day Tuesday.

The county hired contractors to clean up and ventilate the building. A turretlike tower in the historic stone building acted like a chimney as smoke rose through several floors of the building and out the top of the tower.

The fire caused very little structural damage, but widespread smoke damage.
