WINFIELD TWP — A 17-year-old boy was injured late Saturday night when state police say he was shot with a flare gun at a campfire in Winfield Township.

The teen, who authorities did not identify, was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh with thermal burns to the neck and hands. His condition this morning was not known.

Police said an 18-year-old Saxonburg man was at a home on Star Grille Road in Winfield Township lying on a hammock and handling the flare gun about 11:50 p.m. when it discharged, hitting the boy who was about 15 feet away.

The teens were around a campfire at the time.

The boy was hit in the neck. He suffered the thermal burns, which are caused by skin exposure to an open flame, intense heat or scalding water, authorities said. He also had a cut to his chin.

Police noted the victim was “awake and oriented” while being treated by Saxonburg Ambulance medics.

The investigation continues and police on Monday said that it was being treated as an accidental shooting. It was not immediately known if any charges would be filed.

The Herman Volunteer Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
