Rural King open on Thankgiving, others are closed

Some combat 'holiday creep'

While many people will spend Thanksgiving at the dinner table with their families, some may be shopping at Rural King.

That’s right: Rural King at the Clearview Mall will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thanksgiving, according to manager Leroy Shuler, and then again from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Black Friday.

However, the mall itself will be closed on Thanksgiving, opening at 6 a.m. Friday, said mall manager John Brautigan.

But that does not mean that the anchor stores with exterior entrances have to remain closed, as Rural King shows.

JCPenney’s, a store with an exterior entrance, does not know what the hours will be, said manager Philip Kopach. That information is typically released two weeks in advance of Black Friday by the company, he said.

Similarly, newly opened anchor store Dunham’s Sports has not set its holiday shopping hours either, said local manager Valerie Sportelli.

Manager Gretchen Hay said Boscov’s department store is still waiting on the corporation to set its hours as well.

While Rural King is open, some stores have stopped the push to open earlier and earlier, creeping into Thanksgiving.

National electronics and appliances retailer hhgregg will not open its doors at the Cranberry Township location until 7 a.m. Friday, according to Patrick Skertich, a spokesman for the company.

“With business trends in the last decade resulting in earlier holiday shopping, hhgregg is drawing a line in the sand,” said a press release Skertich provided.

“We continue to see a shift in the marketplace and feel it’s time for electronics industry leaders to take charge and move the shift back, to give associates, and people in general, more quality time with family and friends,” said Chris Sutton, senior vice president of marketing for hhgregg.

Bob Riesbeck, president and CEO of hhgregg, said the company has “family-first” values.

“It’s important to us that our associates are able to be home with their families on Thanksgiving, and we are encouraging our customers to do the same,” he said.

Petco, with locations in Butler and Cranberry Township, also will hold off until Black Friday to open its stores, according to Stephanie Wilson with Petco’s corporate communications and public relations department.

Both locations will open at 7 a.m. and close by 9 p.m., Wilson said.

But this isn’t new for the company.

“We have always been closed on Thanksgiving, and will continue to be closed this year as well,” she said.

The same is true for Home Depot, according to Sheryll Campbell, public relations specialist.

“This is nothing new. We’ve never been open on Thanksgiving, so this is really no change for us,” Campbell said.

Home Depot, located in Butler and Cranberry Township, will open at 6 a.m. for Black Friday.

Other major retailers with locations in Butler County have not released their hours for Black Friday including Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Kmart, Kohl’s, Target and Toys “R” Us.
