Warrant issued for man accused of gasoline threat
A warrant was issued Thursday for a man accused of pouring gasoline on himself and threatening to self-immolate during a family argument.
Jeffrey Richard Ford Jr., 27, of Center Township faces two counts each of aggravated assault and arson, both first-degree felonies, as well as misdemeanor charges of terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.
State police responded to a Forward Township house on Baney Lane, occupied by Ford's 49-year-old mother and 51-year-old stepfather, to a verbal disturbance at around 11:30 p.m. Jan. 22, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed shortly after the incident by Trooper Travis Buckshire.
While en route, they were informed a man, later identified as Ford, had poured gasoline on himself and the house's front deck and was holding matches and a lighter.
The affidavit states an argument began when Ford was unable to access his stepfather's computer. Ford's argument, which initially was verbal with his mother, escalated when he threatened to destroy their property, went outside, grabbed a gas can and poured its contents on a wooden deck, the affidavit states.
After sousing the deck, he poured gasoline on himself, according to police.
At that point, Ford's mother went upstairs to get her husband. While the husband was walking downstairs, Ford entered the basement “with a lighter in his hand, with his thumb on the flint smelling of gas,” the affidavit states.
Ford's stepfather, who told police he thought Ford would light the gas, punched Ford, pushed him out of the house, took the lighter off him and removed his gasoline-soaked clothes, according to Buckshire's affidavit.
Ford was transported by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital following the incident for unspecified medical attention. He has not been apprehended.
