Parakeet rescued in city apartment fire
Residents displaced by a fire Thursday afternoon at an apartment building on West North Street in Butler aren't letting the fire ruin their Christmas spirit.
No one was injured in the blaze that was reported at 3:23 p.m. The fire damage was mostly limited to the exterior, but there was smoke damage throughout the two-story, four-apartment building, said Chris Switala, chief of the Butler Bureau of Fire.
Flames were coming from the basement in the rear of the building and were burning the second floor and attic when firefighters arrived, Switala said.
Cindy Fleischer, who lives in a second floor apartments said the fire won't dampen her Christmas even though some presents she received were probably ruined.
“No because we made it out. I'm alive and my bird's alive,” she said, referring to Sam the parakeet which was rescued by firefighters.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
