Several area fire departments helped rescue a horse which had fallen 15 to 20 feet into a ravine in Lancaster Township just before 8 a.m. Friday morning.

Due to the heavy weight of the equine, its position and its exhaustion, the departments had to use an excavator to lift the animal upright before extracting it using a hydraulic wench provided by the Beaver County large animal rescue team.

Adams Area, Callery, Doughtery Township, Evans City, Harmony and Portersville Muddy Creek Township fire companies responded.
