Girl injured in fall from downtown Butler rooftop
A teenage girl was hurt after falling from the rooftop of a four-story building Tuesday evening on Main Street in downtown Butler.
According to Butler County 911 dispatch, the girl, 14, suffered an ankle injury and had severe back pain after falling about 20 feet onto a building near Miller's Shoes, 215 S. Main St.
“She fell from one rooftop to another rooftop,” Police Sgt. Jeremy Walters said.
Butler City Police and Fire departments were dispatched around 7:45 p.m.
The girl appeared to be conscious and talking with her mother by phone while emergency crews tried to reach her.
Authorities kept telling her mother to keep her daughter calm while they called for a ladder truck.
The ladder truck arrived at 8:15 p.m., but was demoted to “Plan B,” according to Butler fire Capt. Jim Kaufman.
“It was Plan A until we got to the window,” Kaufman said.
He said authorities were able to reach the owner of the building, and he granted them access to a neighboring roof to reach her.
“She was small enough to take her through the window,” Kaufman said.
Kaufman said using the ladder could have been a more difficult approach with greater risk than removing her through the window.
“It went smooth,” Kaufman said.
Walters said the girl was taken to a hospital with severe but nonlife threatening injuries
The girl was taken by Butler Ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital.
Later, dispatchers said the girl was flown to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Throughout the ordeal, a group of children huddled together with one another on the sidewalk near the girl's mother.
Walters said the girl's fall stemmed from a trespassing incident in which police believe a group of children were playing on the rooftop.
