Bucs get Craig at No. 22

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Wake Forest University third baseman Will Craig with the 22nd overall pick in the MLB Draft Thursday night.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Craig was the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year this spring. He hit .379 with 26 home runs and 66 RBI.

Craig also walked 47 times while striking out on just 35 occasions.

Television reports originally had the Pirates choosing Craig as a pitcher. He had nine saves for Wake Forest as well, but Bucs’ general mamnager Neal Huntington made it clear his team wanted Craig as a hitter.

The Pirates used their next two picks on high school pitchers, choosing left-hander Nick Lodolo and right-hander Travis MacGregor.
