Businesses build, grow during year
The first decade of the 21st Century ended with 2009.Because of that, the Eagle is publishing a look back at major events that occurred in the past 10 years.Each year will run in one day's edition. This is the eighth in this series and focuses on 2007.———Winter weather kicked off 2007's arrival, closing schools for two days in February after 9 inches of snow and ice hit the region.School also closed in Seneca Valley School District in October when teachers struck for about a month because they lacked a contract.———Economically, 2007 was a good year for Butler County with the announcement by Westinghouse Electric about construction of its new international $200 million headquarters. The company promised at least 3,000 new jobs in its first five years in Cranberry Township.Its offices starting filling up last year.Cedarwood Development broke ground for the Butler Crossing Shopping Center on New Castle Road in Butler Township next to Butler Commons Shopping Center.That caused the road to be widened with turn lanes.A large number of those stores opened last year.That project joined the following construction; MEDRAD in Clinton Township, and Verizon and Mitsubishi, both in the Thorn Hill Industrial Park.The Butler Health System bought the Morgan II building at the intersection of routes 422, 68 and 38, establishing its East Campus as part of its $150 million surgical tower construction project on the Brady Street campus.St. Barnabas announced plans to build a $4.2 million indoor swimming and exercise center.———In the midst of this good news, Butler County officials continued to face trouble when it came to the new county prison. Problems included cost overruns, a contractor who walked off the job and lack of payment to the contractor.The prison went into use this past summer.Meanwhile, the Butler County Family YMCA bought and began working on the former Armco Park in Slippery Rock Township, making plans to open the park to the public and to build overnight accommodations.And in November's election, Richard Goldinger was elected district attorney and former District Judge Kelley Streib won retiring Judge George Hancher's seat.Former state Rep. Frank LaGrotta was charged with two counts of conflict of interest.
