SRU basketball returns to .500
SLIPPERY ROCK — Naquil Jones scored 19 points Wednesday as the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team got back to .500 with an 83-60 win over the University of District of Columbia at Morrow Field House.
Merdic Green added 18 points, six rebounds and five assists for The Rock (3-3) while Amir Maddred had 14 points and Vinny Laskey grabbed nine rebounds.
SRU shot 75 percent from the floor in the first half. The Rock returns to action today at Daeman.
Pitt 94, SRU 47 (women) — The Rock (3-1) played an exhibition game Wednesday at the Petersen Events Center that does not count against its record. SRU played the game without point guard Lexi Carpenter, who was out with an illness.
Cranberry Township resident Brenna Wise paced the Panthers (5-0) with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists in 25 minutes of action. Five Pitt players scored in double figures.
Redbank Valey graduate and SRU freshman guard Brooke Hinderliter led Slippery Rock with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Karns City graduate LeeAnn Gibson came off the bench to score eight points and grab three rebounds.
Gibson sank a a pair of treys.
SRU’s women will play host Ashland (Ohio) in the Ashland Thanksgiving Classic Saturday afternoon.
