Santana homer sinks Pirates

PITTSBURGH — Jarrod Dyson was picked off second base with no one out in the ninth inning Tuesday night, allowing the Cleveland Indians to force the Pittsburgh Pirates into extra innings at PNC Park.

Carlos Santana made Pittsburgh pay by belting a three-run homer off Sam Howard in the 10th inning as the Indians escaped with a 6-3 victory.

Santana's blast sailed over the foul pole down the left field line. Ruled fair on the field, the play was reviewed for a few minutes before the ball was officially called a home run.

Santana had five RBI in the contest. He came into the game with four RBI all season.

The Pirates fell to 4-15 with the loss

Dyson opened the Pirate ninth with a single to right. Jacob Stallings laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt, bu Cleveland retired no one as Dyson beat the throw to second base.

Kevin Newman singled to left with two outs, but Josh Bell struck out to end the inning.

Bell had delivered a two-run single for the Pirates in the fifth inning, knotting the game at three. Newman had three hits on the night.

The Indians scored three runs in the third frame against Pirate starter JT Brubaker. Cleveland managed only two more hits in the next seven innings.

Pittsburgh was playing its first game since Friday in Cincinnati and only its second game in eight days.
