FedEx driver stranded in truck under lines

FORWARD TWP — A FedEx driver was trapped in his truck for 45 minutes with live power lines draped across it, following a crash on Brownsdale Road Thursday morning.

According to Matt Otto, chief of Evans City Volunteer Fire Department, the FedEx truck became entangled in the power lines after a crash between two other vehicles, one of which was a UPS truck.

A personal vehicle hit a UPS truck near the intersection of Brownsdale and Critchlow School roads at 9:15 a.m., Otto said. The UPS truck in turn hit a telephone pole, taking down the wires.

Although not involved in the collision, the FedEx truck was caught in the downed power lines from the telephone pole, Otto said.

“He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Otto said of the FedEx driver.

Dispatchers and crews contacted West Penn Power to shut off the wires. The driver was instructed to stay in his truck until West Penn Power arrived to make sure he would be safe exiting the vehicle.

“He was probably in the car for 45 minutes,” Otto said.

There were no reported injuries as a result of the crash.

“The UPS truck stayed on the road the whole time. It suffered front-end damage and was towed from the scene,” Otto said.

Evans City and Callery Volunteer Fire Departments, Butler Ambulance and state police all responded to the scene.
