Pirates swept in Chicago
CHICAGO — Starting pitcher Ivan Nova lasted only three innings and the Pittsburgh Pirate bullpen surrendered seven runs in the fifth inning Wednesday night in a 17-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs banged out 16 hits in the first seven innings in sweeping the three-game series and dropping the Bucs 10 games out of first place in the National League Central.
Ian Happ, Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo all homered for Chicago. Jose Quintana was the winning pitcher, working six innings and striking out nine.
Happ and Kris Bryant had three hits each for the Cubs.
Josh Bell hit his 23rd home run of the season for the Pirates, who return home to host Cincinnati Friday night at PNC Park.
The Reds have defeated the Pirates in nine of 13 games this year.
