Craig gets 40 boards for BC3; SRU men end Gannon streak
BUTLER TWP — Karns City graduate Mackenzie Craig had 34 points and 40 rebounds Wednesday night as the Butler County Community College women’s basketball team rolled past Penn Highlands, 80-51.
Carly Burdett contributed 22 points for the Pioneers (4-14, 2-0) while Lydia Roth had 14 points and 11 assists.
Penn Highlands 84, BC3 (men) 79 — Joel Stutz scored 29 points and Brendan Record added 25 for the Pioneers (2-17, 1-2).
Josh Knochel netted 14 points and Jace Stutz 10. Justice Lewandowski had 10 rebounds.
The Pioneers host Westmoreland Thursday night in a makeup of an earlier postponement. The women tip off at 5 p.m., the men at 7 p.m.
Slippery Rock 72, Gannon 61 — Led by Micah Till’s 19 points and 11 rebounds, The Rock snapped Gannon’s 9-game winning streak with this win at Morrow Field House.
SRU held Gannon to eight made field goals in the first half, after which The Rock led 33-25.
Christal Malalu also managed a double-double for SRU (16-4, 10-4) with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Bruce Spruell added 17 points.
The Golden Knights (13-6, 9-4) were paced by Zay Jackson’s 23 points.
Gannon 70, Slippery Rock 68 (women) — Nicole LaCava drained a pair of free throws with less than three seconds left to lift the Golden Knights (11-8, 8-5) to a road victory.
SRU’s Morgan Henderson drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 68 with 24 seconds left. The Rock had trailed Gannon, 66-54, with 4:18 left in the game.
LaCava and SRU’s Sierra Fordham tied for high scoring in the game with 20 points. LeeAnn Gibson added 13 points for The Rock (10-9, 8-6) while Brooke Hinderliter and Henderson both tallied 11.
Both SRU teams play at California (Pa.) Saturday.
