Jess Hamilton of Cranberry Township, a junior on the Seton Hill College women's tennis team, helped the Griffins to the school's first-ever American Mideast Conference North Division championship.

Winless two years ago, Seton Hill is 5-5 this year, 4-0 in conference play. Hamilton is a singles player on the squad.

Top-seeded Matt Slamecka of Butler finished second in the under-12 division of the YMCA Airport Tennis Tournament in Coraopolis last weekend.Slamecka lost the title match to No. 2 seed Max Schmerin of Pittsburgh 7-5, 6-1. He won three matches to reach the finals.

Butler graduate and Clarion University sophomore pitcher Josh Gerstel was named PSAC West Pitcher of the Week straight week.Gerstel pitched all 15 innings of a 4-1 win over Lock Haven, allowing an unearned run on six hits while striking out 10. He also pitched an inning of scoreless relief against Mansfield.Gerstel finished the year 4-4 with a save and a 4.15 earned run average. He pitched five complete games in eight starts, striking out 60 and walking 16.Clarion finished the season at 18-29, 5-15 in the PSAC West.

The Rock Solid 15-and-under AAU girls basketball team won the regional tournament last weekend at Carlynton, going 4-0 to advance to the national tournament in July in Winston-Salem, N.C.Members of the team are Jence Rhoads, Megan Spangler, Amy Achesinski, Jaleesa Sams, Julie Molloy, Nicole Cherry, Julie Herman, Abby Basta, Casey McCaffrey and Sheena Aden. The team is coached by Posey Rhoads.

Butler senior girls basketball players Heather Spangler and Danielle Koehring will play in the State Farm Roundball Classic at 7 p.m. Saturday at Geneva College
