IN BRIEF

The Rock Solid 15-and-under AAU basketball team out of Slippery Rock nearly won a national championship over the weekend against teams much older.

The team of Amy Achesinski, Megan Spangler, Julie Ehrman, Jence Rhoads, Casey McCaffrey, Abby Basta, Jaleesa Sams, Julie Molloy, Sheena Aden and Nicole Cherry lost to the Michigan Monarch 62-60 in the championship game Saturday of the All-American Cage Classic National Championships in Dayton, Ohio.

The tournament was for high school teams. Rock Solid is a 15-and-under squad.

Playing without Sams and Ehrman, Rock Solid went 3-0 in its pool and then defeated host Dayton 46-45 before squaring off against a Michigan team that featured players three years older than the members of Rock Solid.

The team will play at Penn State in the Nike Blue Chip Tournament this weekend and will play for the 15-and-under national title July 16 at Wake Forest University.
