Death of Ohio driver still under investigation
State police continue to investigate the weekend death of a 41-year-old northwestern Ohio man who crashed his work truck in Franklin Township, authorities said.
Aaron J. Gadsby of Wood County possibly suffered a medical emergency shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday that caused him to lose control of the pickup truck while traveling west on Route 422, about three-quarters of a mile west of Mount Chestnut, according to investigators.
The Ford F-350 truck crossed over the eastbound lane and hit a guardrail before going off the road, down an embankment and into woods, state police said. The vehicle hit several trees before stopping.
There were no skid marks, authorities said, which suggested Gadsby did not apply his brakes before the truck traveled 80 to 90 feet off the road.
A crash detection service app on Gadsby's cell phone helped alert emergency crews of the wreck, said Ken Wilson, chief of the Prospect Volunteer Fire Department.
Wilson said that while searching for the wreckage, he looked down and saw the pickup's headlights and heard the horn blowing.
Gadsby was wearing a seat belt. Firefighters had to extricate his body from the vehicle, which was destroyed. A stretcher was used to recover the body.
Butler County Coroner William Young III, who pronounced Gadsby dead at the scene, said the driver may have had a heart attack while behind the wheel.
Authorities said he was driving back from a job site in the area of Shelocta, Indiana County, when the wreck occurred. He did not suffer visible injuries in the crash.
An autopsy did not immediately determine a cause or manner of death, which are pending the investigation, Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr said Tuesday.
Unionville volunteer firefighters also assisted at the scene.
