Butler City Council is looking to cut the city’s 2011 budget.

Councilman Joe Bratkovich stated that Tuesday night, saying it was necessary to cut into areas other council members would have preferred remained untouched.

He acknowledged that new vehicles, new staff and staff raises all were warranted, but said “you have to say no sometimes.”

“Somewhere, somehow, sometime, we’ve got to start making cuts,” Bratkovich said.

“There should be more cuts; I just don’t know where else to cut.”

The budget review presented Tuesday called for a $7.84 million budget in 2011, trimming down the $7.99 million budget draft Bratkovich presented in October.

Among the least popular changes were wage freezes for municipal employees not covered under a contract, such as the zoning and code enforcement officers, health officer and administrative assistant.

Also, a change in the city’s health insurance plan from Highmark PPOBlue Enhanced to Highmark PPOBlue could save the city more than $90,000, Stock said.

The council still must take a final vote on the budget.
