Pioneers claim WPCC crown
Paced by 30 assists from Lexie Graham and 10 kills from Macy Smolic, the Butler County Community College women’s volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Pennsylvania Highlands in the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championship match Saturday at BC3.
Alexis Schrecengost added six kills and 13 digs, Baylee Verner nine kills and Amanda Hewitt 14 digs and three aces for the Pioneers, who won by scores of 25-8, 25-18 and 25-11.
BC3, the tournament’s top seed, first defeated Community College of Beaver County 3-0 in the semifinals.
Graham contributed 22 assists to that victory, Schrecengost eight digs, six kills and four aces and Mary Romano added nine kills.
The Pioneers (22-4) will next play in the Region XX championship, which begins Saturday.
Football
Thomas More, the 11th ranked team in NCAA Division III, outgained host Grove City 687-233 as the Saints scored a 66-14 Presidents’ Athletic Conference win.
Grove City (0-7, 0-5) scored on second-quarter touchdown passes from quarterback Caleb Jakiel to Brett Pinson (33 yards) and Tyler Patterson (4).
