Pittsburgh officer shot is SRU graduate
One of the four police officers shot at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill on Saturday was a Slippery Rock University 2013 graduate.
The president of SRU, William Behre, tweeted Monday afternoon asking the “Rock Nation” to keep Officer Anthony Burke in their thoughts.
Burke is one of four Pittsburgh police officers wounded while responding to the shooting Saturday at Tree of Life Synagogue.
A university spokesman said Burke, a Pittsburgh native, graduated from SRU with a bachelor of science degree in education, and was a member of the SRU football team in 2009 and 2010.
Behre's tweet was the first word that Burke was involved in the shooting Saturday. Pittsburgh public safety officials have declined to name all of the officers involved, saying they want to respect the officers' privacy and will release their names at an appropriate time.
Officials have publicly said two officers have been released from the hospital, while SWAT Officer Tim Matson and another officer remain in the hospital. Matson is reportedly in critical condition, while the other office is in stable condition, according to UPMC.
