'Maine' almost perfect
Butler Little Theatre's "Almost, Maine" is almost perfect.
The expertly cast show was a delightful glimpse into many aspects of love. It is a series of stories about love getting lost and found and fallen for.
"Almost, Maine" by John Cariani is a cute and quirky, not to be confused with sweet and syrupy, affair of the heart, skillfully directed by Stefan Lingenfelter.
The talented cast of five spent the evening putting on the persona of different characters who felt, experienced and lost love in a variety of ways. Each of the actors was masterful in portraying the twisted and tangled emotion that is love and seemed to enjoy taking the audience on the sentimental journey.
Aaron Zimmerman, who played several roles including in the opening snowball scene, ran the gamut of emotions throughout the show but was most compelling in the scene "This Hurts" where he described hurt and feelings. His chemistry with his co stars in all his roles was great.
He had superb facial expressions and seemed quite comfortable on the stage. His timing was spot on.
The discovery of love was expertly portrayed in the "Seeing the Thing" scene which stared Michelina Pollini and James Kasparek and a touch of Cupid.
The duo reminded the audience of what it is like when that spark is lit and how sometimes the embers of love just need to be stoked. Pollini and Kasparek were hysterical and sweet, definitely one of the more comical segments.
Kasparek was equally moving in one of the more somber pieces, "Where It Went," a scene he shared with Alison Carey that addressed what happens when love gets lost. They portrayed a married couple trying to recapture their former love and found that wishing on a star didn't always have a predictable outcome.
Whitney Ann Jenkins offered up several great performances where she was both pensive and passionate. Her expressiveness draws the audience into whatever she is feeling.
Lingenfelter did a great job in creating a genuinely lovely evening of entertainment.
