Howard L. Halstead

Howard L. Halstead, 93, of Saxonburg passed away Sunday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 12, 1922, in Saxonburg, he was the son of James G. Halstead and Bessie G. Leslie Halstead.

At 18, Howard started his herd for a dairy farm, which he ran until 1996. He also had an egg and produce route for more than 50 years in northern Allegheny County.

He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he had been a former elder, Sunday school teacher and choir director. Howard also was a member of Clinton Township's election board and planning commission, the South Butler School Board during the 1970s, the Butler County Agriculture Extension, the Butler County Holstein Board and the Pennsylvania Holstein Board. He also was the former director of the Pennsylvania Farm Credit and National PCA Board, a lifetime member of the Sarver Mens' Chorus and a former 4-H leader.

Howard made many friends and often stated how much he loved people.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy S. Staley Halstead, who he married June 18, 1947; one son, James H. (Linda) Halstead of Saxonburg; three daughters, Rebecca (David) Griffith of Madison, Ohio, Ellen H. (David) Fogel of Saxonburg and Ruth H. (Tom) Bates of San Antonio, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jon R. Halstead; one daughter, Melinda Pegher; and three brothers, Clair K. Halstead, the Rev. Paul J. Halstead and Carl H. Halstead.

HALSTEAD — Friends of Howard L. Halstead, who died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fox Funeral Home in Saxonburg.Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Saxonburg with the Rev.
