Man charged with kicking at Butler officer
A Butler man was arrested after allegedly trying to kick a police officer during a weekend traffic stop in the 500 block of West Cunningham Street.
Matthew J. Walker, 23, was arraigned on a felony charge of aggravated assault, and misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also was cited for public drunkenness. He is being held in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.
Police said Walker was a passenger in a Jeep Cherokee about 9:55 p.m. Saturday when Sgt. Jeremy Walters saw the driver spin the vehicle's rear tires at a traffic light at West Cunningham and Pillow streets.
The officer activated his emergency lights and siren and followed the driver, identified as Maxwell J. Bowers, 26, who has no known address, into the Huddle Bar parking lot, according to court documents. Bowers stopped the Jeep and ran away. Walker also got out of the vehicle and started walking toward the police car.
The officer ordered him back into the Jeep but he refused. He then, too, took off running east on West Cunningham Street, police said.
Another officer found Walker inside a nearby apartment building. He was taken back to the police car, where he began to kick the door and window, documents said.
He subsequently tried to kick Walters. Police said he also attempted to get out of the patrol car.
A search of the defendant turned up a marijuana pipe in one of his pockets.
District Judge William Fullerton on Monday issued an arrest warrant for Bowers, who is charged with resisting arrest, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving.
