Woman's SUV careens off road, lands on side in field
SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Firefighters at the scene of a Branchton Road accident Wednesday afternoon described the trajectory of a Jeep Grand Cherokee lying on its side as “Dukes of Hazzard.”
Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company Chief Ryan Hanchosky said the SUV, driven by a woman he estimated to be in her 20s, was heading west toward Slippery Rock around 3:30 p.m. when it veered off the road on the right at 334 Branchton Road.
The driver then lost control, veered left into the eastbound lane and broke through a gate and part of a fence on the Hartzell farm.
The vehicle continued through the farm field and went airborne off a bank above a creek in the pasture, nose-dived into the foot-deep waterway and finally came to rest on the opposite side of the creek on its passenger's side.
Hanchosky said the driver climbed out of the sun roof of the mangled SUV, which was facing east. She had no passengers.
Slippery Rock Ambulance transported the woman to Grove City Medical Center with what he described as moderate injuries.
Hanchosky did not know if the woman was wearing her seat belt.
“She's very, very lucky,” Hanchosky said of the dramatic path of the accident.
While the farmer at the scene would not comment on the accident, Hanchosky said no cows were present in the pasture at the time of the wreck.
State Trooper Ethan Rensel said the investigation into why the woman lost control continues. He did not know if charges would be filed.
The driver's name was unavailable Wednesday evening.
