Drone seminar keeps pilots aflight

The Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport is trying to help drone pilots stay aerial.

The airport will host a drone safety seminar at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the conference room of the Airport Administration Building.

Ike Kelly, airport manager, said the seminar has seating for 40 people and is open to drone pilots of commercial and recreational uses. It is National Drone Safety Awareness Week.

“I think it might be geared a little more toward the recreational flyer to bring them up to speed on FAA regulations,” Kelly said.

Kelly said there are more than 1 million drones registered in the United States, but there is still a lack of awareness of the rules. He said this leads to many unnecessary misuses.

“Regularly they're looked at as a toy or a luxury item,” Kelly said. “That is erroneous thinking.”

Registration for the event is available through the airport's website, butlercountyairport.org, under the “event” category.

Kelly said the speaker is not an enforcement agent and is a great resource.

Kelly said the seminar could offer pilots perspective on areas they may not have considered before or elaborate on new laws put into place.

He said one example is that drones are not allowed to be used on state game lands, so any hunters that were planning to scout out territory for rifle season are out of luck.

“If hunters use them to scout animals in game lands, they would have to answer to not only the Game Commission, but also the FAA,” Kelly said.

Kelly said he will be there even though he doesn't own or operate drones, but because he sees the value in the information.

“I'm going to be there to expand my knowledge,” he said.
